The war against diabetes

In 2015, over 400 million people worldwide are suffering from diabetes. The number of diabetics have doubled in 30 years. In Singapore, 400,000 people are diabetes sufferers. The number is estimated to grow rapidly. By 2050, one in three Singaporeans will be at risk of getting diabetes.

Diabetes is a serious disease which, if left uncontrolled, can cause cardiovascular diseases, kidney diseases, damage to the eyes and nerves resulting in blindness or amputation of limbs.

Watch out for the following factors that can contribute to getting diabetes:

  • This is the number one cause for type 2 diabetes. Excess fatty tissues make your body resistant to insulin, which your body uses for handling sugars.
  • With a big belly, you are exposed to a higher risk of type 2 diabetes.
  • Lacking of exercise. The more inactive you are, the higher the risks of diabetes.
  • Type 2 diabetes can be hereditary.
  • In Singapore, Indians and Malays are at much higher risks of suffering from diabetes, perhaps due to their eating habits.
  • Although older people are prone to diabetes, more and more younger folks are getting the disease too.
  • If you fasting sugar level is in the range of 100 to 125 mg/dL (5.6 to 7.0 mmol/L), you are considered prediabetic, and have a high risk of developing diabetes.
  • Diabetic when pregnant. If you have experienced diabetes during pregnancy, or have given birth to a baby weighing more than 4 kg, you are in the high risk group.
  • Polycystic ovarian syndrome can cause, among other symptoms, diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes, which is the most common type of diabetes, can be prevented by adopting a healthy lifestyle – eat healthily, reduce sugar intake, have regular exercise.

It is important to detect diabetes early by going for medical screening, which is heavily subsidised by the Ministry of Health.

Proper management and control of the disease significantly reduces the risks of serious complications.
