Critical considerations on improving the reliability of bed exit alarms

Technical Malfunctions: Just like any electronic device, bed exit alarm systems may malfunction. The sensor pad, the alarm unit or connecting wires may lose responsiveness

Wear and Tear: After a period of regular use, sensor pads may wear and tear resulting in reduced or increased sensitivity or functionality, leading to false alarms or failing to trigger an alarm when a patient leaves the bed.

Environmental interference: factors such as moisture, dust, fumes or other contaminants could interfere with the proper functioning of the sensor pad. When there are multiple electronic devices are used concurrently in the same vicinity, electromagnetic interference emitting from such devices could affect the responsiveness of the alarm system.

Battery Life: most alarm systems rely on batteries, which may fail to power the system effectiveness when depleted.

Improper Installation or Placement: if the pad is not positioned at the critical  pressure area, or not securely fastened and gets shifted out of the pressure detection range, or blocked by objects such as thick clothes or pillows, its sensitivity may also be affected.

User Neglect : Caregivers may lack the necessary training, fail to follow user instructions, or simply forget the correct procedures to use the alarm system.

To reduce the probability of malfunction of the alarm system and the ensuing risks, healthcare institutions need to regularly review risk assessments, adhere to preventive maintenance schedules, routinely conduct equipment testing and ensure that staff are properly trained on proper usage and troubleshooting procedures.

Importantly, a fall prevention alarm system should be deployed only as a component of a comprehensive, multi-prone fall management program, for users with high fall risks. A single system should not be solely relied on for preventing falls. A series of redundancy and backup systems must be concurrently deployed to ensure patient safety.
